Justification for EICAT assessment

Chlamydia psittaci has been detected in rosy-faced lovebirds and native bird species in Arizona, after a mortality event of rosy-faced lovebirds in residential backyards. Some of the native birds exhibited variable crusty lesions on the head, bill, or legs, with some of these individuals missing parts of the upper or lower bill. There is no evidence that this has caused a decline in populations of native birds (Dusek et al. 2018).

Description of impacts
The rosy-faced lovebird is a host of disease which has also been detected in native bird species and in captivity in the native range. It hybridizes with another Agapornis species in captivity.
