Pittosporum tenuifolium is a shrub or small tree that grows to about 10 m high and has bird-dispersed seeds. It is native to New Zealand and has naturalised in the Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales states of Australia and in the state of California in the United States of America (Hoskings et al, 2007).

This version of the database has been developed by the IUCN SSC ISSG as part of an Overseas Territories Environmental Programme funded project XOT603 in partnership with the Cayman Islands Government - Department of Environment. Summary: Abstract: The exotic species Pittosporum tenuifolium, introduced to the Italian Riviera in the 1980s is widely grown there for its ornamental fronds. For 3 years the nutrient content of the leaves has been analysed and found to vary with climate variations. Pittosporum needs a mild, moderately moist climate and is damaged by excess of either heat or cold. The hot dry weather of 2003 led to a reduction in good quality fronds. Analysis of the leaves revealed low levels of the N essential for strong growth to meet the demands created by repeated cutting of the fronds. Application of nitrogen with a nitrification inhibitor reduced drought damage by producing a better balance of essential nutrients.
